Open Letter from Chairman Basil Bewry- WPS Walkathon

Wolmer’s Schools have been around in various iterations for over 292 years and the Preparatory School (WPS) has been at its present location since 1941. Throughout their long and illustrious history, they have successfully faced down many a threat and this current pandemic provides yet another opportunity for us to rally around the Wolmer’s schools.

It is said that every black cloud has a silver lining and COVID-19 is no exception as it has forced the schools to fully embrace the new technology whether it be online learning, web conferencing or ecommerce. However, the most important lesson learnt has been that whenever we Wolmerians are “Under the Pressure” as Koffee says, “We never give up or never give in.”

Inspired by the late centenarian Captain Sir Thomas Moore, I have decided to walk from WPS to Newcastle Training Depot on August 14, 2021 to raise funds for the prep school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) projects. Your participation in this challenging 29-kilometre journey is welcome by simply donating your hard-earned cash to this worthy cause.

Why Newcastle Training Depot you might ask? Well had it not been for the fact that I graduated from Wolmer’s Boys School in 1975 I am unsure if I would have been selected to join the Jamaica Defence Force as a Commissioned Officer and afforded the opportunity to give active military service both here and abroad. Suffice it to say, this challenge is my pilgrimage between the two institutions to which I owe a debt of gratitude.

Our walkathon’s goal is to raise $12 million (US$80,000) through individual donations and business sponsorships. This we believe is achievable if all Wolmerians and friends lend their kind support. Donations are to be made to the Wolmer’s Trust at NCB Duke Street Branch – JA$ Chequing Account 061037527 and US$ Savings Account 066421910. Contributions can also be made through our website: www.wolmers.org/donate. By giving a little you will help a lot.

Age Quod Agis,

Captain (Ret’d) Basil “Brush” Bewry
