The Gleaner of 8 March 2015, “Sir Herbert, father of the National Stadium,” places his birth in Jamaica on 23 May 1902 and his schooling at Wolmer’s Boys.

The National Stadium was built for the 9th Central American and Caribbean Games. MacDonald was one of those who pressed for a stadium and was named president of the organising committee for those 1962 Games. The paper said he “was awarded a knighthood for his stellar work at the Games.” A bust by the sculptor Alvin Harriott was commissioned. The grandstand tunnel still carries his name — McDonald / MacDonald Tunnel.
