James Aubrey: Wolmer’s Boys, Windsor (Hamm), and St Johns — Ralph in Peter Brook’s Lord of the Flies
Hayward wrote that Aubrey was fourteen when he played Ralph in Peter Brook’s 1963 film of Lord of the Flies. Brook spotted him in a swimming pool at a British Army camp in Jamaica, four days before filming began. The picture was shot in Puerto Rico in 1961. It carried an X-certificate; Aubrey and the other boys were barred from screenings.
He trained at the Drama Centre, London (1967–70), played at the Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow, and later with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Television included Bouquet of Barbed Wire (1976). He died at Cranwell, Lincolnshire, on 6 April 2010. He was born in Klagenfurt, Austria, on 28 August 1947.
