Henry Fowler, master at Wolmer’s Boys
The Guardian of 25 May 2007, in its obituary of Henry Richmond Harold Fowler, recorded that he taught English literature at Wolmer’s boys school, then a leading Kingston grammar school, and that he gave up that job in 1942 to open Henry Fowler’s private school for boys in suburban Kingston. It records his own schooling at Jamaica College, Kingston, and a Rhodes Scholarship to Worcester College, Oxford, in 1935.
Fowler, born 12 May 1915 at Moneague to the planter Horace Fowler and his wife Agnes, died in Oxford on 14 February 2007, aged 91. After the two-year private school he launched the Priory school in 1944 as a private co-educational secondary school and retired from its headteachership in 1973, transferring it into the state system. The Guardian also records him as an early organiser of the People’s National Party, editor of Public Opinion from 1939 to 1943, and, with his future wife Greta Bourke, organiser of the Little Theatre Movement in Kingston from 1941. He later served as Jamaica’s ambassador to Unesco.
