KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Guardian’s centenary Champs feature of 1 April 2010 named Wolmer’s High and its senior sprinter Julian Forte, who had won the Class 1 100 metres and 200 metres.
Forte told the paper the two races would “not mean so much unless my school, Wolmer’s High, gets to win Boys Champs this afternoon… we’ve not won Champs a long time [since 1956].” In the last race, the 4×400 metres, the Guardian wrote that Wolmer’s was a point ahead of Calabar and that Forte “ran his lap with power and grace, to build a sizeable lead.” “The long wait for Wolmer’s was over.” A Guardian gallery the same day said Wolmer’s Boys had won “for the first time in 54 years.”
