LONDON — The Guardian’s obituary of Connie Mark recorded that she “was educated privately at Wolmer’s Girls’ School (Harry Belafonte attended the nearby boys’ school).” She died on 3 June 2007, aged 83.

Born Connie McDonald in Rollington Town, Kingston, on 21 December 1923, she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in Jamaica in 1943 and served ten years as a medical secretary in the British military hospital. The Guardian wrote that she fought for back-pay she believed she was owed and campaigned for Caribbean servicewomen to be recognised. She received the British Empire Medal in 1991 and an MBE in 1993. In Britain she was a founder of the Mary Seacole Memorial Association.
