KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Gleaner of 14 October 2007 profiled Lorna Downie after her appointment, on 1 September, as principal of Wolmer’s Pre-school and Preparatory School.

The paper recorded 32 years of teaching. At Jessie Ripoll Primary she had “not less than 85 per cent” Common Entrance passes over 19 years; in 1994 the 60 students she prepared all received high-school places. She held a B.Sc. magna cum laude from Temple University (2001), an M.Sc. in educational leadership from Central Connecticut State University, and a 2006 diploma in school management from Mount St Vincent University.

In her first month at Prep she introduced a mathematics diagnostics test for grade six — “a first in the history of the school,” the Gleaner wrote. She promised parents she would remain “an integral part of the teaching and learning process.” Born in Cedar Valley, St Thomas; Duckenfield Primary and Morant Bay High. Married to Cleveland Downie; two children.
