The Wolmer\u2019s Boys\u2019 School Auditorium will become cacophony of cheerful expressions today when Wolmer\u2019s Preparatory School\u2019s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) hosts its first-ever V8 Splash Primary and Prep Schools Cheer-Off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A pre-qualifying cheerleading competition, the Wolmer\u2019s Prep PTA aims to make it an annual affair, serving as an eliminator for the local cheerleading finals usually held yearly in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over 2,500 athletes from primary and prep schools in and around the Corporate Area are set to participate in the event, which the institution will host in association with title sponsors V8 Splash and the Jamaica Fitness Association (JAMFIT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Wolmer\u2019s Preparatory School\u2019s PTA is excited to be a part of the Jamaica Fitness Association (JAMFIT) Cheerleading Club. We believe that a healthy and active lifestyle should begin in the early years and that cheerleading is one of those sporting events that will provide our nation\u2019s children with the opportunity to become fit, learn more about team building while at the same time having fun,\u201d shared Lisa Rennalls, PTA President, Wolmer\u2019s Prep School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCheerleading is competitive within the schools and amongst high schools in Jamaica. This is Wolmer\u2019s Prep School\u2019s first time entering the competition at the local stage, while there have been several primary and prep schools that have participated at the national level in Jamaica and have made representation on the world stage,\u201d Rennalls added. \u201cAuditions have been held in order to select the best team members possible. Within the team, there is also a competition to see who the centre stunt group will be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ryan Foster, Wolmer\u2019s Prep Board Chairman, also spoke to the competition\u2019s value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said: \u201cCheerleading is a vibrant sport, and we see this as another avenue for all schools participating in the competition to not only be competitive, but a way of grooming the next generation in the importance of competition in a friendly, fair, and transparent environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am pleased with Wolmer\u2019s Prep PTA in leading this process, and I expect to have a successful competition,\u201d added Foster, who is also secretary general\/chief executive officer of the country\u2019s apex body for sports, the Jamaica Olympic Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rennals further stated that Wolmer\u2019s Prep\u2019s long-term goal of facilitating the development of cheer athletes for the world stage at \u2018Worlds\u2019, and now the Olympic Games, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) bestowed recognition on cheerleading as a sport, which will debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Karelle Jones, president of the Jamaica Cheerleading Club and a director of JAMFIT, talked about the sport\u2019s growth in Jamaica and the strong position it now holds on the global platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jones said: \u201cCheerleading has become a tremendously popular sport in Jamaica. We started out in 2003 with only six high schools, growing now to 60 high schools, 30 primary\/prep schools, 20 tertiary and all-star teams islandwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAlso, with cheerleading now an Olympic sport, we have received international acclaim, ranking eighth in the world in overseas competitions and hosting both international and Caribbean cheerleading events here in Jamaica,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
