{"id":2344,"date":"2022-11-13T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-13T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wolmers.org\/trust\/?p=2344"},"modified":"2026-08-17T21:56:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T21:56:33","slug":"profile-john-mordecai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wolmers.org\/trust\/trust-profiles\/profile-john-mordecai\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir John Mordecai, Wolmer\u2019s Boys 1915\u20131920, Federal Secretary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sir John Stanley Mordecai (1903\u20131986) went from primary school to Wolmer\u2019s Boys\u2019 School for the years 1915\u20131920, the <em>Gleaner<\/em> wrote on 13 November 2022. That same \u201cRemembering Distinguished Jamaicans\u201d column said he won a Government Scholarship, studied at Syracuse University in New York State, and took a degree in public administration. The <em>Gleaner<\/em> called him \u201can exemplary civil servant at the national and regional levels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the West Indies Federation was formed he was appointed federal secretary and, the 2022 <em>Gleaner<\/em> said, \u201cthe chief official\u201d of the new government. A <em>Gleaner<\/em> \u201cThis Day in Our Past\u201d note (30 March 2021) records that in 1962 the \u201cDeputy Governor General of the West Indies Federation, Sir John Mordecai, arrives in Jamaica from Trinidad for a three-day business visit.\u201d He published <em>The West Indies: The Federal Negotiations<\/em> in 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Federation he chaired the new Jamaica Racing Commission from 1971 to 1978, the first person in that chair (<em>Gleaner<\/em>, 19 November 2006).
