LONDON \/ KINGSTON \u2014 In two BBC education reports that week, Mike Baker named Wolmer\u2019s Boys\u2019 School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 15 March 2002, \u201cUK \u2018poaching\u2019 Jamaican teachers\u201d recorded that Wolmer\u2019s had lost two languages teachers and a biology specialist to schools in England. Principal Dave Myrie said specialist teachers were hard to replace \u201ceven at a prestigious grammar school like Wolmer,\u201d called the recruitment \u201cvery unfortunate\u201d and \u201cdoing serious damage to our education system,\u201d and described the drive as \u201cmore like rape and pillage.\u201d Jamaica\u2019s education minister, Senator Burchell Whiteman, told the BBC the system was \u201cat risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four days earlier, \u201cBritish pupils sent to Jamaican school\u201d followed Donna Murray and her British-born son Nkosi, then 13, who had left primary school in Neasden for Wolmer\u2019s Boys \u2014 \u201cone of Jamaica\u2019s most prestigious secondary schools,\u201d set \u201cbehind impressive gates, and set around a cricket oval.\u201d Nkosi said the teachers were \u201cmuch stricter.\u201d Baker wrote that most boys at the school went on to three or four A-levels. Myrie, \u201cborn in Britain of Jamaican parents,\u201d said Jamaican schools thrived on \u201chigh expectation and firm but fair discipline\u201d and that \u201cthe bottom line is that students are expected to do well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
